문답관계 전략의 활용이 영어학습자의 이해 심화 및 사고 확장에 미치는 영향

The effects of the Question-Answer Relationship strategy on deepening understanding and extending the scope of thinking for English language learners

This paper examined the effects of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy on deepening understanding and extending the scope of thinking for primary English language learners. 24 six graders were divided into treatment and control groups, and participated in a 14-week lesson in which they engaged in 7 storybooks. The treatment group experienced the QAR strategy; on the other hand, the control group had questions to check their understanding of the story read. Then both groups completed a graphic organizer and wrote a journal about the storybook read. To explore the effects of QAR, two research questions were established: (a) how do students deepen understanding and extend the scope of thinking in graphic organizers after they had the QAR strategy? and (b) what are the aspects of written response represented in their journal writings after they had the QAR strategy. The results showed that the QAR strategy generated a positive influence on deepening the understanding of storybooks and employ high-level thinking skills. In addition, the content analysis of journal writings uncovered that the treatment group produced more sentences expressed with advanced understanding, feelings and thoughts on their own, and their own experience and background knowledge. The paper ends by drawing some pedagogical implications and suggestions.
