This study aims to investigate Korean 6th graders' English proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), depending on their achievement levels assigned in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA). For this purpose, the following analyses were employed. First, the items on the NAEA English tests from 2006 to 2012 were statistically analyzed and classified into three categories, i.e., those that anchor at the advanced level, those that anchor at the proficient level, and those considered indicative of skills at the basic level. Next, all the items in each category were analyzed in relation to the achievement standards that each item addresses. Lastly, those achievement standards representative of each level were simplified, combined, and integrated into comprehensive descriptions. These generalized proficiency descriptions of each achievement level provide detailed information regarding what each proficiency group of Korean 6th graders know and can do in the four language skill areas.
