The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare game activities of three 5th grade English textbooks developed in the national curriculum revised in 2008. Three English textbooks were analyzed using the following six categories in the current study: materials, patterns of organization, pedagogical focus, language focus, element of competition and cooperation, and element of luck and skill. The results of this study are as follows. First, compared to other game materials, picture cards were used most frequently for game activities in all three textbooks. Second, game activities carried out in groups accounted for the highest rate among the textbooks and they were followed by pair activities. Third, the proportion of game activities for language practice was higher than those for meaningful communication, thus implying that more communicative games are required in the English textbooks. Fourth, the frequency of game activities enhancing written language skills was lower than that of spoken language activities, thus it should be increased because these skills need to be integrated into the English lessons to help the students develop well-balanced language competence. Fifth, the textbooks included more game activities involving competition than cooperation in groups. Sixth, the game activities in which the outcome is decided by luck rather than by the students' language ability formed a relatively large proportion in two textbooks. Based on the findings of the study, it was suggested that the English textbooks to be developed should include the language games that could provide the students with more communicative opportunities as well as more activities promoting their written language skills.
