The present study aims to examine the effects of pairing methods on Korean primary school students' English vocabulary learning. For this purpose, 137 students in 5th grade were selected and assigned to one of four groups: Experimental Group A (homogeneous ability pair group of different gender), Experimental Group B (heterogeneous ability pair group of different gender), Experimental Group C (heterogeneous ability pair group of same gender), and Control Group D (individual learning group). Over the course of twelve weeks, the experimental groups engaged in pair work activities for vocabulary learning, whereas the control group engaged in individual activities. The results of the study were as follows. First, the three experimental groups outperformed the control group. The students in the experimental groups had chances to exchange their ideas and give feedbacks to each other, which resulted in better achievement. Second, it was discovered that the most effective way of pairing was pairing students of different ability and gender. The experimental group B showed significant improvement than the other groups in the post-test. Third, in the affective domains, the students in the experimental groups showed increased interest and satisfaction in learning English. Based on these results, suggestions for further studies are provided.
