Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exercise therapy and manual therapy on shoulder impingement syndrome patients' pain, function, muscle strength, and disability indexes. Method: In this study, 45 shoulder impingement syndrome patients were randomly divided into an exercise therapy group (Ex), a manual therapy Ⅰ group (MTⅠ), and a manual therapy Ⅱ group (MTⅡ) of 15 each patients and the therapies were applied for 30 minutes per time, three times per week for eight weeks. The patients' pain was measured using Visual Analog Scales, ranges of motion were measured using bubble inclinometers, muscle strength was measured manual muscle testers, and disability indexes were measured using Shoulder Pain And Disability Indexes before the experiment and 8 weeks after the beginning of the experiment. Results: Pain, Disability indexes significantly decreased in all of the three group and the decrease in the manual therapyⅡ group was larger than that in the exercise therapy group or the manual therapyⅠ group(p<0.05). The ranges of motion, Muscle strength significantly increase in all of the three group and the increase in the manual therapyⅡ group was larger than that in the exercise therapy group or the manual therapyⅠ group(p<0.05). Conclusion: Combining manual therapy and exercise therapy in treatment of shoulder impingement syndrome patients was identified to be effective in improving the patients' pain, ranges of motion, muscle strength, and disability indexes.
