Effects of Father's Self-Determination, Parental Role Motivation and Satisfaction on Parenting Involvement with Young Children

The purpose of this study was to examine effects of father's self-determination, parental role motivation and satisfaction on their parenting involvement with young children. Subjects of this study were 443 fathers of young children aged 3-5 years old attending 6 public and private kindergartens which were located in Chungbuk province. Data were analyzed by hierarchical regression using SPSS 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follows; First, it indicated that the more father was satisfied with role of supporting children, and the more parent-children relationship was satisfying, the more father participated in parenting of taking care of children. Second, it showed that the higher father's competence self-determination was, the higher internal and external parenting motivation were, the more father was satisfied with role of supporting children, the more parent-children relationship was satisfying, and the less couple's role conflict was, the more father participated in emotional-support parenting for children. Third, it showed that the higher father's competence self-determination was, the higher internal and external parenting motivation were, the more father was satisfied with role of supporting children, and the more parent-children relationship was satisfying, the more father participated in leisure activity parenting. Fourth, it showed that the higher father's relationship self-determination was, the higher internal and external parenting motivation were, the more father was satisfied with role of supporting children, and the more parent-children relationship was satisfying, the more father participated in guidance parenting.
