Financial Management Capabilities and Behaviors of Savings and Investment among University Students

As the financial market becomes complicated, the ability of financial consumers to determine the financial decision in relation to saving and investment has become more important than before. In addition, with the introduction of new financial products, the importance of financial management capabilities has been highlighted as general consumers cannot understand financial products available in the financial market correctly. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain the foundational data about overall financial management of university students who will become responsible adults in the credit society in near future by surveying and analyzing the behavior about saving and investment and financial management capabilities. The study result showed that university students who had taken the financial education had higher awareness on the knowledge and information in relation to the finance than students without financial education. Nonetheless, the study result showed that few students received the financial education before. Therefore, this study suggested that financial education shall be provided systematically in a long-term basis for university students to have foundational knowledge about saving and investment. There were some interesting results about the financial management which was evaluated subjectively. For example, total scores regarding attitude, functions and capability in financial management showed significant differences. In particular, the function of financial management had a highly significant difference. A score in the section of knowledge was the highest among the financial capability attitude, function, and knowledge while the attitude and function had lower scores. This result indicated that university students lacked the ability to take finance-related action, which suggests development of various programs that help university student to take action based on the financial knowledge thereby increasing the financial management capability of university students. The study result will be utilized to motivate university students to have the right attitude towards saving and investment and provide foundational data for development and advertisement of financial products as well as selecting the related education subjects in the future.
