불교에서의 자성의 교육

Jaseong, Spiritual Value of Buddhism and its Teaching on University Education: Focused on Seon Buddhism

이 논문은 불교의 영성적 가치인 자성(自性)이 무엇인지, 또 그 자성을 어떻게 대학교육에서 가르칠 수 있는지를 알아보는 데 초점을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 현대 한국불교의 대표적 선승(禪僧)인 성철 스님(1912-1993)이 실제 대학생들에게 자성에 대하여 어떻게 이야기하였는지, 자성을 가르치기 위해 어떤 방법을 사용하였는지를 살펴보았다. 성철 스님이 말한 자성은 불법(佛法)의 핵심적 내용으로, 인간은 그것을 알게 됨으로써 영원한 생명과 영원한 행복, 영원한 자유를 누릴 수 있다고 하였다. 그런데 이러한 자성은 언어와 문자로 가르칠 수 없다는 교육상 문제점이 있다. 이 문제를 해결하는 방법으로 선불교에서는 화두라는 것을 개발했다. 의심을 기초로 하는 화두는 자성이 무엇인지를 파악하는 일종의 정신개발법인데, 학교교육에서 보편적으로 활용하는 논리적 설명방식을 배제한다. 화두는 기존의 지식의 전달을 위주로 하는 가르침과는 다른 교육전통을 제시한다. 화두를 통해 대학생 뿐 아니라 모든 사람은 우주만물의 실상(實相)을 파악할 수 있으며, 참 행복을 누릴 수 있으며, 대자유인이 될 수 있다. 화두는 동아시아 불교교육문화의 한 부분이지만 종교나 학력, 인종에 관계없이 보편적으로 활용할 수 있는 종교교육 미디어라 할 수 있다.

This paper focuses on what Jaseong, spiritual value of Buddhism, is and how to apply it on university education. In order to do this, we closely looked into Venerable Monk Seong Chol(性徹, 1912-1993), the famous Seon(禪) monk in Korea, how he described what Jaseong is and what kinds of method he used to teach it, in front of university students. Seong Chol descirbes Jaseong as a vital content of the Buddha-dharma and by realizing it, human being can achieve eternal life, happiness and freedom. However Jaseong has a educational difficulty since it cannot be teached by languages and letters. To solve this problem, Seon Buddhism invented Contemplation of a Hwadu(話頭). Hwadu is kind of a mind development process to figure out what Jaseong, and it excludes logical explanation method, that commonly used in school education. Hwadu suggests another educational tradition that different from conventional teaching that focuses on transferring knowledge. Through Hwadu, not only university student but every people can understand Dharmata, seek true happiness and become Buddha. Even though Hwadu is a part of East Asian Buddhistic teaching culture, it can be a religious educational media that can be applied universally, regardless of religion, educational background or ethnicity.
