21st Century’s Postmodern Spirituality and the Great Learning(大學): Lifelong Education in our Postmodern Era

본 논문은 오늘 21세기의 포스트모던 영성의 시대에 대학과 대학교육이 어떻게 변해야하는지를 탐색한 글이다. 오늘 한국 사회에서의 대학교육은 큰 위기를 맞이하고 있다. 신자유주의 무한경쟁의 시대를 맞이하여 대학교육이 한갓 돈벌이 수단으로 전락했고, 거기에 더해서 교육의 새로운 대안이라고 여겨지던 평생교육도 또 하나의 스펙 쌓기의 수단으로 변질되고 있다. 이 현실 앞에서 본 논문은 특히 한국 유교전통의 영성과 대화하면서 대학 공부의 참 의미를 다시 되새기고자 한다. 인류의 여러 종교전통 중에서 특히 동아시아의 유교는 그 급진적 내재적 초월성으로 인해서 21세기 포스트모던 영성으로 잘 이해될 수 있다고 생각한다. 오늘 우리 교육과 삶의 문제가 인간을 철저히 수단화하고 그 존재론적 존엄성과 고유성을 망각한 데서 오는 것이라고 보면서 그러한 유교 영성을 새롭게 회복하는 일을 통해서 우리 교육의 새 길을 모색하고자 한다. 여기서 특히 21세기의 평생교육(lifelong education)을 프랑스의 정치사상가 자크 랑시에르의『무지한 스승』에 나타난 사고와 접목하여 살펴보면서 한국 유교전통에서의 퇴계의 敬사상, 왕양명의 ‘대학(大學)’ 공부에 대한 비전과 연결시켜 새로운 의미를 탐색하고자 한다.

This article aims at the discovering of the ground and the fundament of the 21st century’s alternative education and the lifelong learning of humankind. In doing this, this article recognizes a good possibility in East Asian Confucian tradition, especially in its New-Confucian spirituality of the innate transcendence of human beings and its goal of learning to become a great wo/man(聖學). East Asian Neo-Confucian spirituality emphasizes strongly on human being’s innate ability to become a great being, and this article acknowledges that its emphasis on ethical and spiritual goal of human learning has to be revaluated in our postmodern education and society. That is the work of recovering of spiritual and religious characters of our education, and this article sees that it is also very important for our lifelong education which is now running the risk of falling into another job learning. This article sees a good chance in French postmodern political thinker Jacques Ranciere(1940-) how we can revolutionize our education into more subjective and independent work of students. And it sees that the kernel for that lies in teacher's deep faith on every learner's innate ability to learn and to act. This article regards such abilities as transcendentally rooted in every human being. This article names that faith as postmodern spirituality and finds out its genuine embodiment and reality in East Asian New-Confucian spirituality. Hence, the thoughts of Wang Yang-ming, Toegye, Yulgok etc. are good guides and providers for our postmodern education and lifelong education, and this article tries to bring out valuable lessons from those New-Confucian thinkers.
