The purpose of this paper is to analyze the reasons for the protracted Syrian civil war. The Syrian civil war grew out of a civil uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, as part of Arab Spring uprisings and it is still in progress. The internal reasons for the protracted war are as follows: at First, Syria consists of different religious and ethnic groups which have different interests. This diversity has makes the opposition groups difficult to unite against the Assad's regime. Second, the military capabilities gap between the Assad's regime and rebels is one of the reasons. In spite of the international support, the rebels are not enough to defeat regime's well organized and powerful armed forces. On the other hand, the main external reason for the protracted war is Syria's geopolitical and strategic situations. The Syrian civil war influences not only neighbor countries but also main actors of international politics. Their very different interests make Syrian problem more difficult to solve. Therefore, the International society have failed to propose a consensus to solve the Syrian civil war as yet.
