아랍어의 가축명에 대한 고찰

A Study of Domestic Animals’ Names in Arabic

The purpose of this paper is to study domestic animals’ names in Arabic focusing on comparison between Literary and Colloquial Arabic. Firstly phonological and morphological points such as collective noun and noun of individuality, phonological processes from Literary Arabic into Colloquial Arabic are examined. The Colloquial Arabic dialects which are studied are Egyptian, Palestinian and Moroccan Arabic. And Maltese, a mixed language of Semitic background and European languages, is added to them to compare it with them. And the notable 16 domestic animals’ names that are widespread in the Arab world are explained. They are dog, goose, cat, camel, mule, chicken, donkey, pig, horse, pigeon, deer, cattle, sheep, goat, duck and rabbit. So the following are found : (1) Generally each widespread domestic animal has several Arabic names. (2) Some outstanding domestic animals such as camel, chicken, horse, cattle and sheep have diverse names according to regions. (3) Some Arabic names of domestic animals (i.e. deer) stand for different domestic animals.
