The purpose of this paper is to examine Mary Lamb's adaption of Shakespeare's problem play Measure for Measure, with an adapted pattern focusing on the plot and character. It debates Mary Lamb's attitude in her adaptations as well as her intent and direction in the adaptation used in Tales from Shakespeare. Mary Lamb transforms the main characters in Measure for Measure. The most conspicuous adaptation is her attitude in closing the work. Mary Lamb on the contrary to the original work shows Isabel consenting to the Duke's proposal of marriage with pleasure and then subsequently marrying the Duke. Thus Mary Lamb gives the Tales the feeling of closure which is predominantly lacking in Shakespeare's play. Mary Lamb transformed the original to conform through her intent to teach young female readers. In addition, she adapted the original work into easy, clear prose for young readers. Mary Lamb's efforts enabled them to read and enjoy a literary work more easily, and moreover, succeeded in the goal of fostering a sense of their morality.
