Effects of Raters' Backgrounds (i.e., Korean TEFL Experiences, Majors, Ages) on Speaking Assessments: With Respect to Raters' and Rating Factors

This research aims to investigate whether or not there is a close relationship between raters' backgrounds (i.e., the TEFL experience in Korea, university major, and age) and other factors (i.e., target language familiarity, raters' training, rating experience, understanding Korean students, and overall teaching experience). Twenty-four native English raters participated in this research. Through a careful investigation, it is proposed that all these factors are very crucial in the processes of speaking assessment. This research also indicates that the raters sharing common features with regard to their attitude toward raters' and rating factors should be grouped together. Therefore, this research suggests that the TEFL experience in Korea, university major, and age should be carefully considered when rater groups are organized in order to improve reliability of inter-raters' assessments.
