This paper deals with the last sea-voyage narrative(Mk 8:14[13]- 21) which is called as "one of the most difficult passages in the Gospel for the exegete." The passage, especially verses 17-21 describes very strongly the incomprehension of Jesus' disciples in the Gospel of Mark. Through the structural understanding of the text and its narrative-rhetorical interpretation, the paper mainly examines the meaning of the incomprehension of the disciples in the dispute of yeast(ζύμη) and bread(ἄρτος) between Jesus and His disciples of verses 14-16, by concentrating on the metaphorical meaning of the expressions of "the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod"(τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ τῆς ζύμης Ἡρῴδου) and "one loaf … with them in the boat"(ἕνα ἄρτον … μεθ' ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίω). Firstly, in order to do so, the paper examines its semantic and structural meanings in the text with relation with the word, bread (ἄρτος), one of the key words in the text. With the basis of the narrative-rhetorical exegesis about the text, then, the paper deals with the meanings of the disciples' incomprehension about the yeast and the bread from three theological perspectives: 1) from the christological perspective on the identity and destiny of Jesus; 2) from the perspective of Marcan discipleship; from the perspective of mission motif. Relying mainly and heavily on the narrative-rhetorical exegesis of the text, the study produces the theological meanings of the passage.
