Traditionally, it has been understood that the paragraph in Mark 10:17~22 presents Jesus' negative understanding of the rich. The purpose of this study is to indicate the limits of this traditional view, and to show through the use of social-scientific criticism that Mark's Jesus does not only intend to criticize the rich. On the one hand, Marcan Jesus regards the rich negatively; on the other hand, Jesus in Mark opens the positive possibility for the salvation of the rich. In other words, although the rich fail the renunciation of wealth as well as discipleship, they are considered as people who haves the possibility to enter the kingdom of God in God's almighty power which makes the impossible the possibile. This description of Mark on the rich is related to the context of the Markan community. Mark 10:17-27 reflects the double Strategies of the Markan Community: the one is to criticize the community of Apostles; the other is try to unify the rich group. Mark suggest that the disciples defend the rich. The disciples are amazed at the warning against the rich(10:24). Moreover, they are greatly astounded because Jesus says that: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"(10:25-26). This is connected with criticizing the community of Apostles. The community of Apostles supports the Jewish tradition, which argues that the blessing of God leads to prosperity in this world. However, Jesus as portrayed in Mark emphasizes that the rich can obtain salvation since the initiative to the salvation is in the divine hands. That is, in God's almighty power, the rich can receive the kingdom of God like a child(10:15).
