The Logos Christology of the Gospel of John becomes the core of Johannine theology. To understand the Johannine christology better the role of the Law (νόμος) needs to be studied. However, in the writings of John, especially in the Gospel of John, the Law and the Gospel are not contradictory but rather harmonious and complementing each other. The apostle John does use the term "Law" (νόμος) in a complementary manner for the preparation of the coming of divine grace on earth. The coming of Jesus Christ incarnated is another "grace unto grace" event of the law given through Moses. In a sense, the law in the Gospel of John takes the role of miraculous signs in the Gospel, i.e., the law is showing or leading people to Christ or preparing them to believe Jesus Christ. The law in the Gospel is used as a means for salvation not as the ultimate requirement to salvation. In this sense 'νόμος Christology' has been suggested to complement the deeper meaning of the logos christology revealed. In this sense, the law is providing the ground for the gospel, the greater grace event of Christ's incarnation. The law points out the direction of the coming gospel in a form of prophecy which leads to the maturity and fulfillment of the gospel. John shows the right relationship of the law and gospel by way of combining the two in one body.
