This article is to find out the answer of how Paul himself thought of Christophany at Damascus. St. Augustine s conversion event in 386 which makes an analogy with Paul s Damascus event, has been often mentioned to find out the answer. Is it possible that Paul s Damascus event could be regarded as a conversion, if Paul s Damascus event made an analogy with St. Augustine s conversion event? We have to hear what Paul experienced at Damascus from him to get the answer. There are Paul s autobiographical statements of what he experienced at Damascus (Galatians 1:15-16; 1 Corinthians 9:1-2; 15:8; 2 Corinthians 4:6). Galatians 1:15-16 show a remarkable comparison between the pre-Damascus Paul and Paul at Damascus. So Galatians 1:13-14 say about who the pre-Damascus Paul was, otherwise 1:15-16, Paul at Damascus. Thus we can know whether Paul experienced a conversion at Damascus as the recent christians understand about it undefinedly. However, by the investigation of Galatians 1:15-16, we can know that the Damascus event was not regard as a conversion simply, but as a calling as the apostle for the Gentiles. Furthermore, Paul mentions only one reason why God revealed His Son to him. The reason is Gentile mission, namely, to preach the Christ to the Gentiles. The text, therefore, does not let us know the christian Paul, but Paul the apostle for the Gentiles.
