The Theological Implication and Background of Vicarious Suffering in the Gospel of Mark

Suffering is understood as the consequence of sin, a divine discipline and a benefit for others. Suffering, especially that of the innocent and those unjustly treated, is a universal experience which has perplexed and agonized humanity. This realty is especially a challenge to believe in an all powerful, good and loving God. The meaning of vicarious suffering is the act of allowing oneself to go through suffering for the sake of others. The author of the Gospel of Mark sees Jesus Christ prefigured in the nameless Servant of Isaiah 53. Because Isaiah 53 is used figuratively in the construction of a symbolic world in which the Markan community might live. In fact Jesus in the Gospel of Mark died for our sins and gave his life as a ransom for many(Mk 10:45). As Joseph and Moses suffered vicariously for the many, the Markan Jesus'suffering and death is very vicarious and also in obedience to God's will. Jesus'vicarious suffering and death in the Gospel of Mark is rooted in Isaiah 53's account of the suffering servant and the heroic sacrifice in Greek tragedy. The Gospel of Mark is the first Gospel which has fully developed theology of Isaiah 53's vicariously suffering servant.
