이 논문은 고전소설 낭독에 대하여 서술하였던 기록을 살펴보고 이러한 기록이 현재 전승되고 있는 고전소설 낭독의 사례와 연관되는 양상에 대하여 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 지금까지 알려진 바에 의하면, 고전소설의 낭독과 관련된 기록의 양상은 크게 세 가지로 나누어진다. 전기수에 의한 방법, 자생적 낭독자에 의한 방법, 음악성을 중시하는 방법이 있다. 그리고 이러한 기록의 양상 가운데 현재 전승되고 있는 낭독의 방법은 자생적 낭독자에 의한 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이는 현지 조사를 통해 정규헌, 소헌영, 손종흠의 사례를 통해서 구체적으로 확인이 가능하다. 아울러 이들에 대한 사례 조사를 통해, 낭독자의 명칭, 방법, 장소 등에 대한 구체적 내용이 드러난다. 따라서 지금까지 부분적으로 고전소설 낭독이 지속되고 있는 이상, 그 의미와 가치를 현재적으로 수용하려는 노력이 필요하다.
This paper is aimed at discussing the aspects and characteristics of reading for classic novels handed down to this day. The cases of proceeding with reading of classic novels can be identified by Jeong Gyu-heon, So Heon-yeong and Son Jong-heum, who follow the tradition of reading for classic novels made spontaneously in a house or a village. The case studies of these people found that specified contents, including reader's name, method and place are different from those of professional readers (傳奇叟) revealed through the record. In addition. it is confirmed that their reading style is similar to that of reading aloud(聲讀) of Chinese books. The reading of classic novels is largely divided into three aspects such as a method by professional readers, a method by spontaneous readers and a method with emphasis on musicality. Among them, the aspect of reading by spontaneous readers has continued to last to the present through the Japanese occupation. And this reading proceeds actively due to the relationship between readers and listeners. The fact that the tradition of reading for classic novels has continued to last has an implication that the efforts to accommodate its meaning and value are needed.
