1950년대 경남지역 미국공보원(USIS)의 영화제작 활동

Film Production of USIS in the Kyungnam District during the 1950's: Focusing on the Sangnam Film Production Studio based in Changwon

냉전이 가장 치열했던 1950-60년대 동안 미공보원의 주된 선전활동들(특히 뉴스 및 문화영화를 통한)이 경남의 창원지역을 중심으로 전개되었다는 사실은 그동안 잘 알려지지 않았다. 일부 극소수의 연구자나 이 당시 경남지역의 미공보원 영화제작소(Production and Laboratory Services Unit)에서 활동했던 일부 인사들의 글이나 증언들을 통해 소략하게나마 알려진 바는 있다. 그러나 이들의 글이나 증언들이 지나치게 단편적이어서 역사적 사실에 대한 잘못 등이 발견되기도 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 이 시기 미공보원의 영화제작 활동과 그 내용들을 살펴봄으로써 한국 또는 경남지역의 영화사나 사회문화사에서 빠져 있는 부분을 보완하려는데 있다. 이러한 연구목적 아래 본 논문에서는 다음과 같은 내용들이 검토될 것이다. 첫째, 미공보원(USIS)의 기능과 역할. 둘째, 경남지역에서의 미공보원의 활동과 그 성격들. 셋째, 당시 창원에 소재한 상남영화제작소에서 만든 두 편의 문화영화(<거리의 등대(1955)>와 <지방신문 편집자(1958)>)에 대한 내용 분석 등이 그것이다.

In the 1950's~1960's when the Cold War was at its full height, it was not widely known that the main public relations activities of the USIS was through news broadcast and culture films was focused in the Kyungnam Changwon district. There only has been a brief coverage through the publications and testimonies of extremely partial number of researchers or the limited number of employees of the USIS Production and Laboratory Services Unit in the Kyungnam district. But the writings and the testimonies were far too fragmentary that it does not coincide with historical facts. The objective of this research is the investigate the USIS film production and its film contents to fill in the blanks of the film history and also the socio-cultural history of the Kyungnam district. Under these research objectives this thesis will examine the below three theme. At first, the function and role of the USIS. Second, characteristics and activities of USIS in the Kyoungnam district. At last, analysis of two culture-films, <The Street Light House, 1955> and <The Local Newspaper Editor, 1958> which was made by Sangnam film studio during that period.
