'좋은' 영재교사는 뭐가 다를까?

What makes a 'good' gifted teacher?: A narrative inquiry on 'good' secondary gifted science teachers' school life

영재교육을 '잘'하고 있는 교사들의 사례를 통해 영재교육의 내부를 들여다봄으로써 현장에서 영재교육을 '잘'하기를 희망하는 교사들에게 나름의 시사점을 제공하고자 하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이자 출발점이다. 중등영재교사 29명을 대상으로 영재교사가 갖추어야할 지적 정의적 자질에 대한 개방형 질문을 분석하여 범주화 하고, 이를 기준으로 '좋은' 중등영재교사를 추천 받는 눈덩이 표집(snowball sampling)으로 2명의 연구 참여자를 선정한 후 참여관찰, 심층면담, 인터뷰, 설문 등의 방법을 통해 수집된 자료를 분석하여 영재교사의 교직생활 특징을 내러티브 방식을 통해 탐구하였다. 이와 함께 본 연구에 선정된 두 명의 '좋은' 중등과학영재교사들이 보이는 공통적인 특성들이 도출되었다. 이 연구는 '좋은' 영재교사가 되기 위해선 시행착오의 시간이 필요하며, 영재교사 선정 시 현재의 전문성과 함께 발달 가능성과 정의적 영역에 대한 평가가 이루어져야하며, 영재교사의 전문성 신장을 위해 학교 내 활동에 머물지 말고 영재 연수 및 연구회 활동, 다양한 과학 활동에의 참여를 권장해야함을 시사하였다.

The purpose of the study is to explore 'good' secondary gifted science teachers' characteristics through a narrative inquiry to provide some directions to teachers who want to create better environment for their gifted students. Twenty-nine secondary gifted teachers participated in a survey of open-ended questions on the intellectual and affective qualities that the teachers for gifted education are supposed to have. Snowball sampling method in which the survey answers were analyzed and categorized for the selection criteria was used to recommend two gifted teachers as participants of this study. The data from the two participants were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews and surveys, and analysed to study the characteristics of each teacher's school life. In addition, common characteristics of the two good gifted teachers were described in detail. This study suggested that to become a 'Good' secondary gifted science teacher, he/she should undergo trial and error, and potential possibilities and affective qualities, not present professionalism, should be emphasized for the selection of the teachers for the gifted education. Also, gifted teachers should be encouraged to be a member of a study group and participate in training programs and various academic activities outside the school.
