The Types, Roles, and Organizations of Ritual Musicians in Korean Shamanism Rituals

한국 무속 의례에서 음악은 필수적인 요소이다. 그런데 한국 무속의 대표 의례인 굿에서 굿 절차의 진행자와 굿 음악 담당자가 나뉜다. 굿의 진행자로 알려진 무당은 기본적으로 음악에 관여하지 않으며, 별도의 음악 담당자가 음악을 맡는다. 술맞이 할머니, 장구 할머니, 기대, 남자 악사 등이 바로 굿의 음악 담당자이다. 이들은 굿에서 음악 담당자 이상의 역할을 한다. 또한 굿 음악 담당자의 대표적인 존재는 남자 악사인데, 이들을 중심으로 神廳으로 통칭되는 무속 조직이 만들어져 무속의 전승과 무속계의 권익보호에 기여하였다. 기존에 한국 무속을 바라보는 시각은 무당 중심적이었다. 한국 무속 의례에서 음악이 필수적이며 굿에서 음악 담담자가 차지하는 위상과 역할을 고려할 때, 무당 중심적인 시각에서 벗어나 보다 포괄적인 시각에서 한국 무속에 접근하는 것이 가능하다.

Music is an essential element in Korean shamanism rituals. There is a differentiation between performing ritual processes and playing ritual music in Korean shamanism rituals. Korean shamans are not basically involved in playing ritual music. There are specialists in ritual music of Korean shamanism: Sulmajihalmeoni, Janguhalmeoni, Gidae, and male ritual musicians. The representative of specialists in ritual music of Korean shamanism is a male ritual musician. Male rituals musicians have done more than playing ritual music in Korean shamanism rituals. They also formed organizations of Korean shamanism and contributed to the transmission of Korean shamanism and protecting the rights and interests of diverse members of Korean shamanism. Through the consideration of the status and roles of male ritual musicians, it is possible to approach to Korean shamanism in a more comprehensive viewpoint without dropping into a shaman-centered viewpoint.
