Development of Communication in Korean Pre-School Children Examined by the Children's Communication Checklist-2

  • 232

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of age group on the communication skills of the typical development of Korean children between three and six years of age. They were examined using the Children's Communication Checklist-2(CCC2). The differences between boys and girls were investigated. For each scale of the CCC-2, the means & standard deviations of raw scores showed a decrease with respect to age. The performance of the three-year-old children differed on the Speech, Semantics and Stereotyped language subscales for the 4, 5, & 6-year-old children; and on the Syntax, Coherence, Inappropriate initiate, and Use of context subscales form the 5 & 6-year-old children. Three-year-old children differed from the five-year-olds on the Nonverbal communication and Social relations subscales. Boys performed similarly to girls except on the Semantics scale. The CCC-2's internal reliability was near normal range in the Speech, Syntax, Semantic, and Social relations subscales. On the Stereotyped language and Nonverbal communication subscales, the internal reliability was not high. This inconsistency could be explained by parental difficulty in understanding as well as cultural sensitivity. The CCC-2 may provide an effective means to identify and characterize pragmatic language difficulties using a standardized approach.
