A Study on the Hangul Letters' Names and Orders

  • 323

There is a discrepancy between the Hangul orthography system of South Korea and the Chosun orthography of North Korea. The purpose of this paper is to provide an alternative idea about the Hangul letters' name, number and order for the time of unification between North and South Korea. For this purpose, I inquire the Hangul letters by historicity, scientism and constructivism. In the historical aspect, I examine the Korean script along with the academic and ideological background at the time it was invented. And I apply a general theory of modern phonetics for the scientific aspect. I also study constructivism which has a learnercentered- educational philosophy for the educational aspect. As a result, on the whole, in South Korea, the recognition about Hangul letters is scientific, but in North Korea, educational. The most important aspect of letter operation is the letter user. In the future, when a unified orthography system is established, we need to create a model of Chosun orthography that raises an educational concern. On the other hand, I think that with pronunciation such as palatalization, exchangeable consultation between North and South Korea is a realistic plan.
