A Study on Actors' Self-consciousness in Character Building

This study was concerned with the self-consciousness that interrupts character building and acting. The purposes of this study were to define the cause of this obstacle in acting and to develop acting methods used to overcome it. First, the fact that both social environment and psychological condition could be causes of obstacles in acting have been discovered in this research. Secondly, acting methods of Brecht and Growtowski as the solution for the above problems were explored in this paper. While Brecht's acting method for epic theatre attempted to remove conscious obstacle by means of self-observation, Grotowski tried to focus on severe body training and impulses through it. In conclusion, overcoming self-consciousness in character building should be approached from various dimensional viewpoints.
