The Global Nature of the Interpretive Effects of Merge

It has been assumed that the interpretive effects of Merge are supposed to be captured in terms of some local context of a Merging operation. In this paper it is claimed that the interpretive effects of Merge should be captured not only syntactically or morphologically but also phonologically or semantically (functionally as well) in terms of non- determinism proposed in Yang (2013). According to non-determinism, I propose there should be recognized three types of interpretive effects in terms of LF and PF effects: (a) LF-PF Interpretive Effect, (b) PF-only Interpretive Effect, and (c) LF-only Interpretive Effect. For the theory of three types of interpretive effects according to non-determinism, it is naturally assumed that the notion of edge feature (EF) of Chomsky (2008) has to be eliminated (Yang 2013). Hence, my non-deterministic theory of interpretive effects works with the null hypothesis of Merge as proposed in Yang (2013). Given the null hypothesis of Merge for the interpretive effects of Merge, ambiguity or multiplicity of the interpretive effects per Merge may be systematically captured. At the same time, a movement theory based on free Merge along with proper interpretive effects is suggested and investigated.
