『中國歷史地圖集』의 戰國時期 燕 長城 고찰

A Study of Yen kingdom's Great Wall during the Warring States period in The Historical Atlas of China

『中國歷史地圖集』에 제시된 燕 長城을 검토하였다. 특히 한반도 중북부 지역까지 연결시킨 연 장성의 실체를 분석하였다. 燕 長城은 요하이동지역에서 고고학적으로 그 구체적인 실체를 밝혀내기에는 그 근거가 충분치 않다. 『地圖集』에 제시된 요동지역, 한반도지역의 燕 長城 노선은 당시의 사료에 나타난 상황과는 부합하지 않는다. 당시 사료에 障塞, 障으로 기록된 것을 『地圖集』에서는 長城이라고 해석하고 이를 표기하였다. 하지만 이와 같은 해석은 무리가 있다. 장성과 장새, 장은 당시에 다른 개념으로 인식 사용되고 있었다. 『地圖集』에 구체적으로 제시된 燕 長城 노선도에 문제가 있다. 고고학적인 근거가 전혀 뒷받침되지 않았다. 압록강을 건너 한반도 중북부지역까지 연결시킨 燕 長城은 이를 뒷받침할 만한 학술적인 근거를 찾기가 어렵다. 『地圖集』에 제시된 노선도는 그 근거에 대한 역사적, 고고학적인 뒷받침이 없어, 학술 자료로 이용하기엔 문제가 있다. 더욱이 『地圖集』출간이후 1987년 북한에서 조사 보고된 이른바 대령강장성은 그 노선도에서 『地圖集』과는 달라 문제점을 나타내고 있다. 이후의 중국학자들은 대령강장성을 燕 長城유지가 구체적으로 확인된 것으로 인식하였다. 하지만 대령강장성에 대한 고고학적인 조사결과 燕 長城이라고 파악할 학술적 근거가 충분하게 제시되지 않았다. 특히 燕 長城의 東端이라고 『地圖集』에 특별히 표기된 '滿潘汗'에 대한 구체적인 위치비정에 문제가 있다. '滿潘汗'과 관련하여 제시된 박천지역의 '古博陵城'에서 고고학적인 흔적을 찾을 수 없기 때문이다. 『地圖集』에 제시된 청천강까지 연결된 燕 長城의 실체와 이와 같은 『地圖集』의 연구결과를 지지하는 이후 중국학자들의 연구내용은 문헌적인 측면, 고고학적인 사실관계 등을 고려해 볼 때 학문적으로 신뢰하기 어렵다는 결론에 이르게 되었다.

The Historical Atlas of China(TANQIXING, 1982, CHINA CATROGRAPHIC PUBLISHING HOUSE) is the most representative compilation of historical maps of China, which was published in 1982 after a generation of research. Inside this work, Yen-era Great wall of China is stretched all the way to middle and northern part of the Korean peninsula. This article therefore is aimed at critically examining such subject. I have discovered that the great wall drawn in this atlas implicates many problems as follows. First, an indication that the great wall of the Yen kingdom which crosses the Yalu river deep into the peninsula does not have much supportive academic grounds, let alone the backings of documentary records, since the wall's archaeological evidences lack concreteness. Thus, it seems logical that the wall did not pass the Liao river. The Great Wall of China appearing in the historical atlas also is portrayed contrary to the actual developments of contemporary Yen kingdom, and does not correspond to the investigation results of other Chinese scholars as well. Nevertheless, this atlas currently exerts considerable influence in and out of China. Hence, this article concludes that Yen-era great wall of The Historical Atlas of China does not provide any tangible proof, so that such material is unfit for serious research purposes.
