The Empirical Analysis of Career Metaphors for Successful Career Development

성공적 경력개발을 위한 경력메타포 실증 분석

경력메타포는 끊임없이 변화하는 일터에서 인간의 사고와 행동을 지배한다. Lakoff와 Johnson(1980)은 메타포가 인간의 의식에 내재해 있는 것으로 보았다. 따라서 변화무쌍한 경력 환경에서 개인의 의식에 잠재된 메타포를 분석하고 이를 활용한다면 경력개발은 한층 강화될 수 있을 것이다. 시대적인 상황에 따라 변화된 경력 메타포를 분석하여 도출된 결과는 경력 상태를 진단하고 경력개발과 관리를 위한 유용한 도구로 활용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서 경력 메타포에 대한 실증 분석을 통하여 경력 메타포를 실용적으로 활용할 수 있도록 유형화하였다. 이를 위해 경력이론들을 고찰하고 경력개발의 개념적 변화에 기초하여 1세대부터 4세대까지 구분하였으며, 경력 상태를 반영하는 14개의 경력 메타포를 규명하였다. 그리고 경력개발에 활용할 수 있도록 메타포를 분류하는 준거를 소개하였다. 본 연구에서는 질적ㆍ양적 접근 두 가지 모두를 활용하는 사례 연구 방법을 취하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 경력개발 세대 구분과 이에 따른 경력 메타포들은 경력개발에 대한 개인의 경력개발에 대한 인식 수준 진단에 도움이 될 것이다. 또한 세대별로 구분하여 제시한 경력 메타포는 경력 경로 과정에서 당면하는 문제들을 극복하는데 효과적인 방법이 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서 제안한 경력 메타포의 유형은 일상생활에서 경력개발에 대한 사항에 대해 별도의 설문지 없이 스스로 진단할 수 있는 용이하면서도 유용한 도구로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

A career metaphor dominates a person`s thoughts and actions in an ever-changing work place. According to Lakoff and Johnson(1980), a metaphor is latent in the person`s consciousness. Career development in the era of protean careers can be intensified by analyzing changes in metaphoric expressions of career. The use of a career metaphor can be a useful tool to measure current career situations and provide a guide to career development and management. The main purpose of this study is to formulate a practical classification for successful career development through the empirical analysis of career metaphors. This paper reviews career theories, classifies them into four phases based on conceptual changes of career development, and identifies fourteen career metaphors to reflect career situations. This paper also introduces criteria to categorize the metaphors for practical applications based on the capability of career development. This study used a case study method utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches The classification of career metaphors proposed in this paper can be a simple but useful tool in daily life for self-diagnosis of career development.
