Recent Advances in Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy, as a standard treatment for cancer along with surgery and chemotherapy, has several advantages such as short treatment time and, OPD based, painless treatment. It nonetheless, had the limitation of the improper delivery radiation dose to tumor because of various side effects caused by unnecessary irradiation dose to normal tissue. However the technical advances that have been achieved over the last two decades in the area of treatment planning and new complicated hardware capabilities such as computer controlled treatments, multileafs collimators, and imaging devices make the clinical application of high precision radiotherapy possible. The recent trend in cancer treatment focuses on preserving the structure and function of organs and improving life quality. Therefore, it is expected that high precision radiotherapy will be widely used in cancer treatment and also elderly patients will receive more precise and effective radiotherapy.
