The purpose of this paper is to analyze the recognition of the Korean middle school students about the correlation between English vowel spelling and pronunciation. The research questions are “Can they particularly specify the vowel sounds pronounced phonetically as [ɔ], [aʊ], and [oʊ] depending on the related spellings?” and “ In what relation between spelling and pronunciation do they make mistakes most?”. To find the answers, a test requires that the students choose the 1ight spellings to fit the given vowel sounds [ɔ], [aʊ], and [oʊ]. Ninety Korean middle school students who consist of fifty boy students and forty girl students participated in this study. The result is that there is little correlation between the English spelling and pronunciation according with the expose of the aibitiary tendency that is difficult to relate it with the correlation between letters and sounds. This would be due partly to the discrepancies between spelling and sound, and partly to the same spelling representing different vowel sounds. The low recognition of the Korean middle school students about the correlation between English vowel spelling and pronunciation might be left as a research subject in respect to form-focused explicit or cognitive approach.
