A study of the comparison between the collaborative story-telling class and the collaborative story-creating class for primary school students

This paper examines the effects of collaborative story-creating and story-telling in the two different classes for primary school students. To compare the effectiveness of a story-telling class (24 students) and a story-creating class(26 students), this study measured preliminary and post English achievement tests. This study also administrated a survey on students’ attitude towards their learning, and interviewed students as well as teachers. The results showed their different achievements and attitude levels between the two different classes over a period of 21 weeks. Both classes increased students' language achievement score. However, there were big differences in learning attitude and collaborative writing skill. The students in the story -creating class were highly motivated by making a storybook. Based on the results of the two different collaborative story-creating and telling classes, this paper discusses the factors that lead to an effective class with story-based language learning. By exploring these elements, this paper suggests the educational implications for those who want to develop and implement a story-based language teaching approach for primary school students.
