Effects of text coherence on EFL learners’ English reading performance

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of text coherence on EFL learners' English reading performance. To fulfill the purpose, 262 college students were asked to take a multiple choice test followed by reading a passage. The subjects were divided into two groups (107 high and 155 low) using a cloze test. Following this test, all participants completed another test to establish background knowledge and vocabulary. Then half of them in each group read cohesive text; the other half less-cohesive one. The results were that text coherence affected the students’ English reading performance and that text coherence influenced their English reading performance differently depending on their reading proficiency levels. Accordingly, it can be suggested from the results that, if possible, the teacher has to supply EFL learners with coherent texts suitable to their levels in reading class.
