The Burlesque Poetry(戱作詩) makes both the author and readers laugh so that it can change their thought and attitude with emotions relaxed and keep each other's intimacy. The method of expression of these poems is called ‘a good joke(戱弄)’. A good joke is naturally received with the speaker and listener smiling. The objects of the Goryeo Burlesque Poetry are the author himself, gisaeng(妓生), Buddhist monks, friends and the world in general. First, a good joke to the author himself expresses self-reflection on his own mistakes, self-deprecation on the transience of human life, joyfulness, willingness, and disappointment with humor and wits. Second, a good joke to gisaeng includes expression of temptation, flagrant expression toward a sexual object, wistfulness in love and parting and longing in separation. Third, a good joke to Buddhist monks is a rebuke given to them when these inteligentia and religious leaders deviate from the right path. In fact, this is an active expression of expectation for their relationship and Buddhism. Fourth, a good joke to friends is a way for him to communicate his own ideas with close people. This aims at friends receiving poetic expressions naturally and delivering more movingly than direct speech. Fifth, a good joke on humanity and society in general through expressions of objects is a criticism on negative human attitudes and social contradictions and an expression of curiosity about movements and changes of things.(Silla University)
