Tales of undercover agents are about people who travel across the country in secret with their identities concealed for their own purposes among historical figures. ‘Tales of Park Mun-Su’ who was renowned for a secret royal inspector (暗行御史) and ‘Tales of King Sukjong’ who saw how his people lived in disguise every night can serve as an example of tales of undercover agents. Although close similarity between these two tales has been pointed out in fragments thus far, there has been no consideration by holding them together. Thus, this study examined the recognition properties of tales of undercover agents after setting the tales of undercover agents as a group and then reorganizing the types of the tales into ‘problem solving based on undercover agents’, ‘appearance of helper and mutual recognition’ and ‘problem solving based on people’. The tales of undercover agents are not based on historical fact but on universal recognition of people who got through turbulent times in cultural history, the late Joseon Dynasty. It can be said that the tales of undercover agents are descriptions showing new cultural dynamics to open communication across borders without excluding each other within the framework of rigid ideology.
