판본 비교를 통해 살펴본 「토지」의 수정 양상과 서술상의 특징

『토지』는 만 25년이라는 창작기간을 거쳐 총 5부 25편 361장, 원고지로 대략 31,200장 분량의 방대한 양으로 이루어져 있다. 이처럼 방대한 원고와 25년에 걸친 집필기간은 원문의 왜곡과 훼손에 한몫을 하였다. 거기에 텍스트에 엄밀한 검토 없이 진행된 잘못된 출판 관행은 텍스트의 오류를 한층 심화시켰다. 모든 문학연구의 출발은 신뢰할 수 있는 판본을 확보한 이후에 가능하다. 본 연구는 바로 이러한 문제의식으로부터 출발하였다. 구체적으로는 판본비교를 통해 드러난 눈에 띄는 오류의 사례들을 유형별로 살펴보았다. 우선 작가의 수정이 가해진 대목을 적시하여 인물 관련 서술과 사건에 대한 작가의 태도 변화를 중심으로 원래 의도가 어떻게 수정되었으며 수정의 의미는 무엇인지에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 출판사와 편집자의 개입 혹은 실수에 의한 왜곡의 사례에 대해서도 검토하였다. 판본 비교를 통해 원 텍스트(original text)에 대한 수정 양상을 검토하여 확보한 자료는 연구자에게는 작가의 의식, 문체의 변화 양상 등을 파악할 수 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 소설 창작을 꿈꾸는 예비 소설가에게는 수정 전과 수정 후의 원고를 비교해봄으로써 창작 방법에 대한 여러 단서를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

While going through 25 years’ creation period, 「Toji」 has a huge volume of five editions, 25 series, and 361 pages which are equivalent to about 31,200 pages in squared manuscript paper. Such a huge volume of a manuscript and 25 years’ writing period were part of the causes of distortion and damage to the original manuscript. All the more, the wrong publication practice which had been carried out without a close review of texts further intensified the occurrence of errors in the texts. All the literature studies may be begun only after ensuring reliable texts. This study stemmed from such a critical awareness. In detail, the study looked into the cases of evident errors in accordance with error type through the comparison of different texts. First, the study reviewed how the original intention has been modified focusing on changes in the attitude of an author toward descriptions and incidents regarding characters and what the meaning of modification was by pointing out a part to which modification was added. In addition, the study reviewed the cases of distortion by the intervention or mistake of a publication company and/or an editor. Data obtained through the review of the modification pattern of the original text through the comparison with different texts will be utilized as data which enables researchers to identify an author’s awareness and the changing pattern of writing style. Moreover, such data will be able to furnish novelists-to-be who dream of creating novels, with various clues about how to create works by making the novelists-to-be compare manuscripts before and after modification.
