대학 교양교육으로서의 독서교육

Reading Education as University General Education

대학 교육이 엘리트 중심에서 대중 중심으로 변모하면서 교양교육의 중요성은 갈수록 커지고 있다. 교양교육으로서의 독서교육은 지식기반사회에 능동적으로 대응하면서도 전인교육이란 교양교육의 목표에 도달할 수 있는 핵심적인 교육이기에 국내 주요 대학은 권장도서 추천과 해제집 발간, 독서프로그램 개발, 고전 및 명저 읽기를 강화한 독서교육 교과목 개설 등의 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이 연구는 교양교육으로서의 독서교육을 활발하게 실행하고 있는 국내외 대학의 사례를 통해 독서교육의 방향을 검토 연구하여 몇 가지 제안을 하였다. 먼저 다양한 주제별 독서교육 과목을 개설하여 학생들의 선택권을 보장하고 통합독서교육의 원리에 따라 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기, 말하기를 통합한 세미나 수업을 위해 소수 정원으로 운영할 것을 제안하였다. 또한 신입생들이 대학에 입학하기 전 우선적으로 독서교육을 실행하여 고등교육에 진입하는 학생들의 적응력을 높이고 동기를 부여하여 평생독서의 습관을 기르는 출발점으로 삼아야 함을 강조했다. 더불어 국내 주요 대학이 독서교육을 필수 과목으로 지정하고 있지만 아직은 그 수가 적다는 점에서 글쓰기와 연계하여 독서 관련 과목을 필수화할 것을 제안했으며, 대학 특성화에 기반을 둔 독서교육을 위해 대학 고유의 추천도서 선정이 중요하며, 독서교육이 교과목 개설만으로 한계가 있기에 독서문화 진작을 위한 다양한 독서프로그램 개발이 필요함을 강조하면서 ‘한 책 읽기’ 독서프로그램을 모델로 제안했다. 대학의 독서교육은 자기 주도적이고 능동적인 독자를 길러내는 교육이어야 한다. 대학교육을 끝으로 대부분의 학생은 제도 교육을 벗어나 스스로 학습하는 평생교육의 단계로 나아간다. 따라서 이 연구는 생애를 통틀어 자발적 평생교육의 근간이 독서이기에, 지식기반사회에서 독서교육이야말로 대학이 가장 역량을 쏟아야 할 교양교육임을 강조하였다.

Reading education is an important education in order to reach the goal of general education and all-round education and to respond actively to knowledge-based society. Students must be a compulsory subject of the reading education courses in response to reading education to pre-university. University of properties to recommend the book containing a variety of reading programs for developing the students' interest should be induced. That way, ‘one book’ reading programs offered. University of Reading education should cultivate self-directed readers and active reader. Reading is the foundation of life-long learning and a knowledge-based society in General Education at the University of reading education should be considered the most important.
