This paper, based on the survey as to learning awareness of non-Japanese majors who registered for the Japanese language courses in college, purports to show their reasons and motivations in learning Japanese. To do so, study subjects of non-Japanese majors are selected from four colleges located in Daegu city and Kyungbuk province, then divided into two groups according to whether they have earlier exposure to Japanese education. Among those with prior learning of Japanese, 92% of the subjects took Japanese as the second foreign language compulsory in their middle or high school, while 27.5% are interested or motivated to take Japanese classes in college because of their previous experience in the compulsory. Regarding their expectations as to the Japanese society, 33.6 % of the study subjects choose the Japanese courses to obtain job information and opportunity for Japanese companies.
