구한말 한국교회 사회운동의 교회사적 의미와 한계

Church Historical Significance and Limit of the Social Movements in the Early Korean Church

한국의 교회는 이 땅에 기독교가 처음 들어온 이후 120년 동안 늘 이 민족과 동고동락하며 민족의 발전을 이끄는 원동력이 되었다. 그리고 한민족이 어려움을 당할 때 민중들과 함께 고난을 당하며 민족의 애환과 함께 하였다. 선교초기 장로교회를 중심으로 조선에 입국한 선교사들은 교육과 의료 사업뿐 아니라 남녀평등을 비롯하여 미신타파, 아편 금지 등 반봉건투쟁을 하였다. 이러한 사회운동은 선교사들을 중심으로 진행되었다고 할 수 있는 반면에, 독립협회 운동이나 시장세 납부 투쟁 등 조선인들을 중심으로 한 사회운동이 있다. 이러한 한국 장로교회의 사회운동은 한국사회의 발전과 근대화에 크게 기여하였다. 반면에 선교사들은 자국의 이익을 우선시 한 면이 있었으며, 한국인들을 중심으로 한 사회운동에 있어서 정교분리의 원칙으로 인해 벽에 부딪히는 일도 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 선교사들을 중심으로 한 사회운동은 민중들의 아픔과 함께 한 사회운동이라고 할 수 있으며, 한국인들을 중심으로 한 사회운동은 민족 주체적인 사회운동으로 자리매김하였다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 한국교회의 사회운동은 늘 민중들과 함께 낮은 자의 위치에서 행해져야 할 것이다.

Korean church have served as the impetus for a national development sharing the pleasures and pains of life with this people during 120years since Christianity was first introduced into Korea. Whenever Korean people was in trouble, the churches have gone through hardships with peoples and experienced the hard lives of them. The missionaries entered the Chosun Dynasty headed by the presbyterian churches in the early mission served not only the educational and medical works but also struggled against a semifeudalism, such as the abolition of superstition, the prohibition of the use of opium including the gender equality. As these social movements have been conducted by missionaries, so the social movements like the independent association movements or struggles for market-taxes have been conducted by Korean people. These social movements of Korean presbyterian churches did much for development and modernization in Korean society. On the other hand, the missionaries gave priority to their national interests, and they bumped into the wall in social movements due to the principle of separation between church and state. Nevertheless, the social movements of the missionaries can be described as a social movement with the pain of the masses, and the social movements of Koreans can be said to be established as social movements. Therefore the social movements of Korean Church is always to be made in the modest position with the people.
