Hermeneutical Equilibrium as a Methodology of Expository Preaching

본 논문은 충실한 강해설교를 위한 새로운 방법론으로서 성경 저자가 원래 의도한 본문의 의미에 더욱 가깝게 다가가기 위해 해석학적 평형을, 오늘날 청중들의 삶 가운데 그 의미를 적용하기 위해 설교적 평형을 제시한다. 해석학적 평형은 순수한 형식적 절차로서, 세 가지 일련의 원칙들을 해석에 적용함으로써 본문의 객관적인 의미에 도달하기 위한 방법론이다. 이 방법론은 해석자 자신의 의견이 본문을 지배하도록 하는 것이 아니라, 해석자로 하여금 본문 저자의 원래 의미에 충실할 수 있도록 도울 뿐만 아니라, 본문의 진의를 파악하는데 있어서 성경신학을 제3의 배경이론으로 갖는다는 점에서 기존의 해석학적 순환(나선)보다 방법론적으로 우월하다고 할 수 있다. 설교적 평형은 텍스트의 의미와 청중의 정황 사이를 반복적으로 움직이면서 가장 적실한 적용점을 찾는 방법론이다. 본 논문은 강해설교에서 적용의 문제는 본문의 의미를 파악하는 해석학적 절차와 구별되는 별개의 단계가 아니라, 해석의 과정과 처음부터 밀접하게 관련되어 있음을 전제로 한다.

This paper proposes that the proper way to satisfy both the question of authority and the question of relevance in the process of exegesis and contextualization is through the method of hermeneutical equilibrium, which is a purely formal procedure. It does not permit an interpreter to impose his own ideas onto biblical text; rather it makes him subject to the author’s intended meaning. Hermeneutical equilibrium has methodological superiority over hermeneutical circle (spiral) in that the equilibrium can clarify the specific procedures for determining the author’s intended meaning, which the hermeneutical circle (spiral) cannot explain. The process of reaching the meaning of a text using the method of hermeneutical equilibrium is characterized as a back-and-forth process of revision aimed at reaching a coherent and objective interpretation of the text. Homiletical equilibrium envisions application as a back-and-forth movement between the text and audience and between ‘then’ and ‘now.’ Through homiletical equilibrium, preachers can make the connection between scriptural truth and people’s everyday lives.
