인간의 내면과 자연에 나타난 하나님의 계시도 있지만, 인간의 죄로 인해 오직 성경의 계시만 실제성이 있다고 하는 데서 칼빈의 성경관이 시작된다. 그는 성경의 저자가 성령이고 성경 기자들은 성령의 비서들이라는 데서 성경의 권위를 세웠고, 이 근거 위에서 공의회와 교부들을 포함한 전통의 권위를 성경의 권위에 종속시켰다. 최고의 권위는 오직 성경에 있다는 것이다. 성경의 권위는 성경의 고전성과 연관된다. 칼빈은 성경의 고전성을 성경의 높은 문학성과 고대성으로 증명하였다. 성경의 문학성은 수사법, 문체, 내용 등에서 찾았고, 고대성은 다른 모든 고전보다 시간적으로 앞섰다는 시간적 우선성과 역사적인 전승과정에서 하나님의 섭리로 유지된 진정성과 역사성 등에서 찾았다. 최고의 고전은 오직 성경이라는 것이다. 칼빈은 성경을 넘어서는 무익한 사색과 하나님의 말씀에 대한 무지를 똑같이 비판하였다. 그리하여 주님이 비밀로 숨겨 두신 것은 탐색하지 말아야 하며, 공개하신 것은 경시하지 말아야 한다고 지적하였다. 신학과 목회를 포함하는 실천의 범위를 성경으로 제한한 것으로, 실천의 규범은 오직 성경이라는 것이다. 요컨대, 칼빈의‘Sola Scriptura’ 원칙은 최고의 권위는 오직 성경에 있고, 최고의 고전은 오직 성경이며, 실천의 규범은 오직 성경이라는 의미를 내포하고 있다.

Calvin’s view on the Scriptures begins by saying that God reveals the actual knowledge of Himself upon us only in the Scriptures. And he established their authority in that their real author is the Holy Spirit and their writers are the secretaries of the Spirit. On the basis, Calvin subordinated the authority of traditions including ecclesiastical councils and church fathers. Only the Scriptures have the supreme authority. Calvin proved the classicality of the Scriptures with their high literary character and their ancient history. The former lies in the better rhetoric, style, and substance than other all classics, and the latter is derived from the time priority than other all classics. Only the Scriptures are the supreme classics. Calvin criticized the useless speculations beyond the Scriptures and ignorance of the Word equally. He pointed out that we should not search what the Lord left in a secret and not neglect what He opened for us to know. Thus Calvin confined the limits of actions in theology and pastoral circumstances. Only the Scriptures are the standard of actions. In short, Calvin's principle of the 'Sola Scriptura' means that only the Scriptures have the supreme authority, only the Scriptures are the supreme classics, and only the Scriptures are the standard of actions.
