In the fishing industry, Korea has grown into one of the world s leading fisheries nations, but today Korea is in a recession in the fishing industry because of changes in domestic and foreign fisheries conditions. The main purpose of this study is to find policy implications by empirically analyzing the trade performance of Korea s regional fisheries in the Japanese market. The empirical analysis is mainly based on different measures of EBI and TSI. To calculate these indices of fisheries goods of Korea and Japan for the period of 2004-2013, the KITA data and the UN Comtrade data are mainly used. The empirical results show that Korea s local fisheries gain high export concentration and export specialization for the Japanese market in both many provinces and various export items. If this trend continues, while looking at changes in the indices, the local fisheries gain high export concentration and export specialization for the Japanese market in only a small number of items in many provinces. These results suggest that relative to the fisheries trade with Japan, the strategy for diversification of export markets and export items in the fishing industry should be strengthened.
