This paper empirically investigated whether the diffusion of ISO 9000 standard promotes or hinders the bilateral exports and imports in G20 countries via multiple channels such as enhanced competitiveness effect, combined information/compliance-cost effect, and common language effect. The OLS estimation is made by using panel data over the period of 2007 to 2012 and allowing the lagged variables of ISO 9000 standard to detect its diffusion process in the gravity model of trade. The empirical results are summarized as follows: It is found that the overall effects of ISO 9000 standard has the significant impact on the flows of exports and imports in G20 countries even if its diffusion effects are fluctuated. It is shown that these effects are larger when lower income countries are trading partners. Also It is found that the overall effects of ISO standard have the significant and positive impact on the flows of exports and imports when the interaction effects of ISO certification ratios are made between G20 and trading partners countries. These results implies that the diffusion of ISO 9000 standard plays a role to lower the transaction costs because they are enhancing the transparencies of products information and the compatibilities of products and its parts and increasing the information flows between producers and consumer. Consequently adapting ISO 9000 standard contribute to facilitate the trade transaction between G20 and trading partners countries.
