Subsisting on only a few U.S. dollars a day, BoP markets are largely ignored by companies, but collectively, such markets provide an opportunity for companies to capitalize on this large and growing segment. This paper revolves four case studies of BoP projects which were analyzed in the context of ICT usage based on their business models. Such a cross-sector approach allowed for cross-fertilization as well as a discussion on potential synergies across sectors. Three business models were identified and these included value-added information directly accessed by end-users, value-added services accessed through local agents, and financial services. Sectoral analysis was conducted and focused on the health, agriculture and financial services sectors after which thirteen ICT-enabled examples in two cross-sector clusters were organized based on the business models of these cases. Findings showed that the four main business outcomes of incorporating ICT-based strategies are increased revenues, reduced costs, improved business functions, and more inclusive product and service innovations. By pursuing ICT-based strategies, companies can overcome the challenges traditionally associated with BoP markets and significantly improve their inclusive business models.
