Innovation is important for survival and development of small and medium sized firms(SMEs) with limited resources. However, SMEs have many problems due to limited sources in increasing innovation performance. Accordingly innovation strategy readiness of a firm s CEO is a necessary precondition for innovation performance. In addition to innovation strategy readiness, research and development(R&D) and human resource management are used as the factors affecting innovation performance. Using the firms located in Taegu and Kyungpook region, this study investigates the effect of innovation strategy readiness on patent performance as proxy to innovation performance and examines the mediating effects of both R&D and human resource management on the relationship between innovation strategy readiness and patent performance. Using a sample of 362 firms, this study shows the positive effect of innovation strategy readiness on both R&D and human resource management, as well as the positive effect of innovation strategy readiness on patent performance. Moreover, this study reports the positive mediating effect of R&D on the relationship between innovation strategy readiness and patent performance. However, the positive mediating effect of R&D is only evident in firms lasting more than the average of firm age.
