마이뉴트맨 프로젝트(Minuteman Project), 국경안보, 그리고 반 이민주의

Minuteman Project, Border Security, and Anti-Immigration

  • 87

The organization called Minuteman Project is established in October, 2004, but in a less than 6 months, it became the nationally well-known voluntary civil border watching group. And this group has even grown to be the voice of the anti-immigration network in the U.S. today. Thus, this study is to explore the emergence, activities, and nature of the group and to understand the mysterious success of the Minuteman Project. It has aimed at stopping illegal immigration by protecting the national border first. However that was not what they really wanted to do. What they really had in mind was to attract the attention from the media and force the U.S. government to act to protect the national integrity and the rights of the American people. The Arizona-Mexico border surveillance by Minuteman volunteers was the one prepared for that purpose. This surveillance activity has shown how the organization and government worked together and how the media gave a fame to the Minuteman. The Minuteman Project in collaboration with the government, aided by the mass media, has grown rapidly to be one of the most influential anti-immigration force in the U.S.
