The aim of this thesis is to investigate ideas and necessity of the lifelong education which John Dewey emphasized in his works and to suggest some desirable directions of lifelong education based upon his main ideas. Conclusions are as followings: Firstly, researchers found and reviewed Dewey's key concepts as foundations of basic ideas and principles of lifelong education involved in his works: change, experience and growth. Secondly, researchers examined critically some difficult problems of lifelong education based on philosophy of John Dewey. For example, problems such as conceptual confusion, inconsistency between programs and practices, and loss of direction were discussed. Thirdly, researchers analyzed current tasks to solve by lifelong education in this days and then desirable directions of this field in this future. Especially we suggested some methods to solve problems, for example, securing continuing concept of lifelong education, recovering essential meanings of this education, and realizing educational value of individuals and community eventually.
