A study on analysis of the correlation between English reading proficiency of Korean health science college students and learner factors

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between English reading proficiency of Korean college students majoring in health sciences and motivations based on the Self-Determination Theory, learning strategies, and learning styles concerning physical sense preference. This study showed that identified regulation revealed the most preferred one among other subtypes of motivations, and that upper groups comparing to middle and lower groups used more learning strategies, and that significant contributors on the English proficiency were found to be the group of cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, memory strategies, and experiences of taking the TOEIC test. Therefore, to maximize students' English reading proficiency, the teachers need to help modifications and extensions of the learning style of their students, encourage learners' extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, and help students to be able to apply appropriate learning strategies in language learning.
