This paper investigated the narrative characteristics and consciousness of reality as seen in the type of folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter". This type of folk ballad is constituted of the shocking story, where a woman calls down a curse upon a man who will marry another woman. As the result of a curse, he dies on his wedding day. This type of folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter" could be classified into six subtypes according to the connection of narrative paragraphs ; 'A maiden's temptation', 'A maiden's curse', 'A bride's lament', 'Union in the world of the dead', 'the remarriage to get a concubine', and the mixture type. These subtypes show the desire and frustration for love commonly, on the other hand each subtype express the different characteristics and consciousness, therefore they should be analysed very carefully. 'A maiden's temptation', expresses the maiden's desire for love, 'A maiden's curse' the desire and frustration of hopeless love, 'A bride's lament' the frustration of deprived life as the widow, 'Union in the world of the dead' the paradoxical realization of hopeless love, 'the remarriage to get a concubine' the legal wife's criticism for the husband that get a concubine, 'the mixture type' the dream for the true relation of husband and wife tied with love. These characteristics have been formed from the critical consciousness for the society that the love and marriage by the free will are impossible. The suppressed desire for love in the reality spreaded to the grudge and hatred for a man(husband) betrayed herself, at last it was expressed with the curse for the man(husband). Moreover, the folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter" revealed the compassion and comrade consciousness for women who lived unfortunately because of absence of love. As the result of that, the folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter" could be not only a maiden's song who have the desire for love, but also many women's song who have the consciousness of reality.
