Narrative Characteristics and Character Figures of the Tale of Queen Selected : Lee, Gangsuk version

The Tale of Queen Selected is the story of a woman character who overcame the limitations of her family background and was selected to be a queen. The tale is being handed down as a legend titled Queen Jungsoon episode, also as a folk tale whose main character is an anonymous woman. The tale differs in the way to build characters depending on genres. The legend type of the tale often uses holy motif that makes movements of the character divine and implies the destiny of the character, thereby weakens the personality of the character. On the other hand, the folk tale tends to stress the personality rather than holy motif by describing the actions of the character. This paper finds out that the oral version of Lee, Gangsuk, though it is handed down in the form of folk tale type, is unique in that ir shares the characteristics of written rale and oral tale, and legends and folk tales through the examination of narrative structure and motifems. The Lee, Gangsuk version superbly illuminates the identity and persoanlity of the woman character by using story of selling dream that transforms divine signs into reality. The tale of Queen Selected is a meaningful piece of narrative literature in that it creatively conveys the traditions of initiation story and the women character type with extra-ordinary power.
