A Study on the heroine of <Po-eui-gyo-jip>

(Po-eui-gyo-jip(布衣交集)> is the Chosun dynasty novel written in Chinese character. It was written in the late l9C, at least after 1866. The writer is unknown. This work created a new heroin type, her name is Cho-ok(楚玉). She was 17 yaers old and was of humble origin, but she was talented in the literature including the works in the Chinese character. Besides she was very beautiful. When she was single, many rich men wanted to meet her. But she had never met any of them It's because she deadly wanted to have the equal and ideal relationship with man. She had expected that she would meet man not because of money or status but because of the man itself. Even though she wanted to meet a man of intellect and character, her husband was illiterate. Her marriage life was unhappy. On this condition, she came to meet Yi-seng(李生), who was the nobility to come from a country. He was also married. Though he belonged to the noble class, he was a man of inability. He was far from her ideal type. He didn't want to bear the responsibility in the relationship with her. But Not noticing his problems, she decided to love him and devoted to him. Her eyes were covered with her desire for the ideal relationship. She abandoned her comfortable life and chase him. Comparing her with him, she was sincere, but he was not. After realizing whole things, she determined to end her love and to leave Yi-seng and her husband, too. According to this work, the heroin was described to be a very subjective person. This kind of woman character had never been made before Cho-ok. And this heroin remind us 'Shinyeoseong(Neo lady)' in the modernization period of Korea.
